JOB SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Material Manager, the Assistant Materials Manager will work closely with the Material and Operations. Assist with Leading the materials team by creating and implementing Materials management objectives and implementing policies and procedures to ensure key objectives are met. Ensures that organizational materials objectives are successfully achieved, primarily related to cost and delivery. The Assistant Materials Manager is expected to inspire and lead by setting the example and driving the 5 C’s (Care, Commit, Connect, Communicate, & Celebrate).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership and daily direction to Materials Analysts, Service Parts Analyst and Materials Supervisors.
  • Monitors and strives to improve department KOI’s.
  • Maintains daily communication with Customers to ensure requirements are understood and supply is uninterrupted at the Customers’ facilities.
  • Manages and reviews cycle count activities to ensure integrity of inventory in ERP system.
  • Ensures supplier releases are accurately developed and distributed in a timely fashion.
  • Monitors the inbound supply of materials to ensure an adequate supply at all times.
  • Continuously strives to optimize inventory levels and reduce cost.
  • Oversees tracking and execution of engineering changes from Bill of Materials to production implementation.
  • Manages the delivery and warehousing of component parts and raw materials.
  • Maintains top OEM service scores.
  • Ensures all employees within the department (new and transferred) have received all required training in a timely manner.
  • Ensures Material Supervisors are adhering to standardized work instructions, rotation schedules and cross training is done as necessary.
  • Ensures cleanliness and organization is maintained in the warehouse storage areas.
  • Ensures the thoroughness and timely completion of scheduled performance reviews for all employees within the department.
  • Ensures all Company policies, procedures, plant standards, and safety rules are consistently adhered to.
  • Collaborates with the Human Resources Manager in the administration of disciplinary action, when necessary.
  • Supports and enforces the principles of the Employee Charter, Company goals and objectives, and decisions and policies by taking ownership and communicating these in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Establishes open and honest dialogue with the union in administering the UAW contract.

  • Displays a positive attitude towards safety, works safely and follows all the Company's safety policies and procedures./
  • Complies with all Health, Safety and Environmental standards in accordance with company policies, the Occupational Health & Safety Act. and the Michigan Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Ensures all employees and visitors have a safe environment in that safety and housekeeping standards are maintained; and all hazards, unsafe actions, or unsafe conditions have been identified, corrected, and/or eliminated.
  • Responds to and investigates all reports of injuries, accidents, illnesses, near misses and property damage immediately.
  • Takes an active part in the division’s safety program by performing regular workplace inspections, effectively investigates accidents/incidents promptly, and assists in meeting or exceeding the division’s safety goals.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five to seven years of progressive materials experience in a JIT automotive manufacturing environment.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and present information to customers, suppliers, vendors, management, employees and corporate personnel.
  • Excellent analytical, problem resolution and project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems.
  • Strong organizational skills; and the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks and priorities within and across departments/business units to meet established and changing deadlines.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

Work performed in an office and manufacturing plant environments. Normal mobility to move around an office environment, able to conduct normal amount of work at a computer. Frequently exposed to varying temperature within plant depending upon external weather condition. Frequently walks, stands, grips/grasps, bends/stoops, crouches; and lifts and carries up to thirty (30) lbs within the manufacturing plant environment.
