Bloomberg Associates (BA) is Bloomberg Philanthropies’ pro bono consulting service founded by Michael Bloomberg, the 108th Mayor of New York City and Founder of Bloomberg LP, as a philanthropic venture. We provide services to cities that help governments improve the quality of life of their citizens. BA works across nine (9) different focus areas: Cultural Assets Management, Marketing & Communications, Media and Digital Strategies, Municipal Integrity, Social Services, Sustainability, Transportation, Economic Development and Urban Planning, with teams that have deep subject matter expertise and extensive experience in municipal government. 

The Position 

We are seeking a highly motivated Cybersecurity & Technology Fellow to join our small, dynamic team. The Fellow will conduct research and data analysis that informs Bloomberg Associates’ municipal cybersecurity engagements with client cities. 

This fellowship is designed for graduate students or early-career professionals seeking hands-on exposure to municipal cybersecurity and public sector technology strategy. This role is fully remote and part-time, working an average of 20 hours per week. The Fellow would be on a 6-month contract.     

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Conduct thorough research on municipal cybersecurity and technology topics, including but not limited to ransomware, artificial intelligence, smart cities, and government regulation  
  • Perform research on publicly available information, including city technology department budgets, staffing models, and strategic plans 
  • Support the preparation of client deliverables, including memos, reports, PowerPoint decks, and spreadsheets 
  • Participate in and support client meetings through note-taking, action tracking, and preparation of materials 
  • Draft best practice guides on additional topics relating to cybersecurity and technology 
  • Contribute to the development of reusable tools, templates, and guidance documents for use across client cities 
  • Synthesize insights across client engagements to identify common challenges, trends, and emerging best practices 

Qualifications of the ideal candidate 

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a graduate program (or equivalent academic experience) in cybersecurity, information systems, public policy, or a related field 
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals (threats, vulnerabilities, risk mitigation) 
  • Demonstrated interest in technology through coursework, research, projects, or internships 
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, small-team environment with strong ownership and initiative 
  • High attention to detail 
  • Comfort working with data in Excel and preparing presentations in PowerPoint 
  • Ability to translate complex information into clear, concise written and visual materials 
  • Genuine interest in municipal government and public service
