Psych ED Registered Nurse

Mission Health, based in Asheville, NC, is a comprehensive healthcare provider committed to improving the health and wellness of the community it serves through advanced medical services and compassionate care. We are seeking a dedicated Psych ED Registered Nurse to join our Healthcare & Medical Services department and provide high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals experiencing psychiatric and behavioral health emergencies. In this role, you will work in a fast-paced emergency department environment, performing focused and comprehensive nursing assessments for patients presenting with acute psychiatric conditions, co-occurring medical issues, and crises such as suicidal ideation, psychosis, substance use, and severe mood disturbances.

You will triage patients based on acuity, collaborate closely with emergency medicine and behavioral health providers, and develop and implement individualized plans of care using evidence-based psychiatric nursing practices. The Psych ED Registered Nurse will administer medications safely, including psychotropic and emergency medications, monitor therapeutic and side effects, and provide ongoing evaluation of patient responses. You will implement non-pharmacologic and trauma-informed interventions to promote safety, stabilization, and emotional regulation, employing verbal de-escalation, milieu management, and crisis-prevention techniques.

You will coordinate and support the safe management of patients on involuntary holds or under observation, ensuring adherence to legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements. This position requires strong therapeutic communication skills to engage patients and their families, obtain histories, provide education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and medication regimens, and support shared decision-making whenever possible. You will collaborate with psychiatrists, emergency physicians, social workers, case managers, security, and other interdisciplinary team members to facilitate comprehensive evaluation, timely disposition planning, and appropriate transition of care to inpatient, outpatient, or community resources.

Documentation of assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the electronic medical record must be thorough, timely, and compliant with organizational and regulatory standards. The Psych ED Registered Nurse will participate in safety huddles, handoff reports, and interdisciplinary rounds to ensure continuity of care, and will contribute to quality improvement initiatives related to behavioral health care in the emergency setting.
