Senior Social Worker

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

This position serves as Senior Social Worker in the Mental Health Residential Recovery and Treatment Program (MHRRTP) at the Alexandria VA Health Care System (AVAHCS) main campus. Duties performed include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborates with the other members of the interdisciplinary treatment team in the provision of comprehensive mental health services to Veterans, ensures equity of access, service, and benefits to this population and ensures the care provided is of the highest quality.
  • In conjunction with the healthcare team, identifies and assesses risk, safety, supports and implements appropriate interventions/treatment for those who are experiencing abuse, neglect, exploitation or are experiencing domestic or intimate partner violence. Adheres to VA and mandated reporter requirements. Advises and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams throughout the medical center on abuse, neglect, exploitation and intimate partner violence issues.
  • Possesses advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of SUD and co-occurring conditions. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges.
  • Provides Advanced Directive information and education including but not limited to the following: Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, Living Will, Health Care Directive, and/or treatment preferences document to Veteran and families. Also assists the Veteran in preparing such documents, as requested. Assists the interdisciplinary team with identifying appropriate decision makers if Veteran is unable to make own decision (Next of Kin, HCPOA, Legal Guardian).
  • Performs comprehensive suicide risk screenings and assessments and develops and integrates safety planning and safety goals into the Veteran's collaborative, individualized treatment plan.
  • Ability to determine priority for services and provide specialized treatment service.
  • Provides case management services for Veterans in residential treatment at AVAHCS.
  • Completes post discharge follow up appointment calls for those discharged from residential care at AVAHCS and other VA facilities.
  • Provides clinical services on weekends as part of a rotation with other clinical providers.

Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
